(OTTAWA) Deepak Obhrai, M.P. and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, today met with Her Royal Highness Princess Astrid of Belgium, who is on a tour of Canada to raise awareness about malaria and to call for increased action to eradicate the disease.

In his discussion with Princess Astrid, Parliamentary Secretary Obhrai highlighted Canada’s “Save a Million Lives” initiative unveiled by Prime Minister Stephen Harper in 2007, which contributes $105 million over five years to improve healthcare for impoverished mothers and children in Africa and Asia.

PS Obhrai also explained to Princess Astrid Canada’s ongoing aid to Africa, the Millennium Goals and Canada’s G-8 Maternal Health initiative and pointed out that eradicating malaria is part and parcel of the Maternal Health initiative.

In her capacity as Special Representative for the Roll Back Malaria (RBM) Partnership, Princess Astrid was accompanied by Professor Awa Marie Coll-Seck, RBM Executive Director and Former Minister of Health of the Republic of Senegal, and M. Robert Newman, Director, World Health Organization, Global Malaria Program.
